The Big Write: Great Aussie Inventions
Dear Parents
In Week 3, the students will undertake the next 'Big Write'. Details of the topic and ways in which they can prepare for this writing task were outlined in Week 2's Home Learning Schedule and on Canvas.
Please assist your child with the 'Talk Home Learning' by asking them the questions listed and any others which may spark their critical and creative thinking about their life as a chosen Great Aussie Invention.

Year 5 fundraising - Seat auction
Dear parents,
Earlier in the year, Year 5 heard from Charlie and Gracie who, together with their parents, spent time volunteering at the Happy Days Cambodian Village School in the Semester 1 school holiday break. We were all blown away by how little the children had in terms of health care, material possessions and infrastructure and have wanted to do something practical to help.
We need your help
Click the link below and make an offer on your child’s seat. On Friday 1/11 – the highest bid will win the seat. Once the funds have been received (cash in an envelope to the school), we will send your seat home with your child. We kindly request that all funds be delivered to the school by Friday 8/11.

Earlier in the year, Year 5 heard from Charlie and Gracie who, together with their parents, spent time volunteering at the Happy Days Cambodian Village School in the Semester 1 school holiday break. We were all blown away by how little the children had in terms of health care, material possessions and infrastructure and have wanted to do something practical to help.
As you are aware, Year 5 have been undertaking the SEAT project – a program where
students learn about sustainability, collaboration and their potential to make
a difference in the world. As a means of raising funds, we are auctioning our seats online so that
we can put the proceeds towards purchasing some mosquito nets. In his
presentation to the class, Charlie shared that coming into the wet season,
there is a great risk of dengue fever and malaria outbreaks in Cambodia. Providing school students and their families with some mosquito nets would be a small gesture that would be of significant
assistance.

Welcome back - Term 4
It is hard to believe we are already in Term 4!
We hope you had an enjoyable holiday break with your families. Thank you for supporting your children with their home holiday reading. I have had many interesting conversations with students this week about their chosen books.
This term we will be undertaking a novel study of Once by Morris Gleitzman. It is the story of a young Jewish boy who is determined to escape the orphanage he lives in to save his parents from the Nazis in occupied Poland in the Second World War. If you are interested in supporting your child with their reading, it would be a great idea to read it yourselves. Conversations at home about the the characters, themes and context would be of great benefit to your child.

Students have just this week finished decorating their seats which means that they will be ready for auction as of next week - more on this to come in a later blog post.
Tomorrow we will be sending 3 of our Year 5 classmates to the Stage 3 IPSHA Debating Gala Day. Good luck to Harrison, Jamie and Amelie! The rest of the class will be commencing the first day of the beach sports program starting with surfing at Palm Beach.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the learning in the Year 5 classroom. We look forward to another terrific term and a positive end to the year.

SHORT STORY COMPETITION - Only two weeks left!
Kidsnews.com.au is giving budding authors the chance to win an iPad, HarperCollins book pack and have their own story published as a book for 10 family members and friends. There are categories for students 10 and under, plus 11 and over. Entries close October 31.
HOW TO ENTER
Write a short story on any topic of your choice, or use the Story Starters ideas list on the web page for inspiration.
For entrants aged 11 years and over, your short story must be between 500 and 1000 words. For entrants aged 10 and under, your short story must be between 250 and 750 words.
Get your parent or guardian to sign the Permission to Publish and Consent Form.
Then take the form to Mrs Duffy and ask her to email both the signed form and your short story to kidsnews@news.com.au with the subject Short Story Competition before October 31.
