How have advances in scientific knowledge and technology helped minimise the impact of natural disasters?

This week, the students had the opportunity to put into practice some of the learning activities outlined by Mrs Susie Duffy and myself at the recent Digital Technologies Night. The tasks required students to draw on their capacities in Resourcefulness, Resilience and Reciprocity as they engaged in self-directed learning, referring to video tutorials and instructions sheets for guidance. Using Microbits kits, the students built seismic, wind and heat sensors and developed data monitoring systems. This activity required students to step outside their comfort zones as the grappled with the challenge of assembling the components of each system and coding instructions. They gained an appreciation of the complexity of digital systems as well as an awareness of the need for ongoing improvements in such systems so that they can fulfil their purpose even more effectively in the future.

Twilight Athletics Carnival.

We are looking forward to the Twilight 3-6 Athletics Carnival on Thursday. Students are welcome to wear their sports uniform on this day, to make afternoon arrangements a little simpler.

Moving and Shaking in Year 5

In Science, we are learning how to become seismologists. We've been making seismographs, recording and analysing data from live seismic monitoring websites and designing our own early warning systems for earthquakes and tsunamis.

Personification - Writing in the sunshine

Yesterday, Year 5 spent time seeking inspiration from the outdoors as we practiced using personification in our writing. It was so nice to enjoy the warm sunshine!

The birds danced around the trees as they called to each other happily - Gracie

Visible Thinking in History

Year 5 spent time analysing the text The Rabbits by John Marsden and Shaun Tann. 

The Rabbits, is a partly symbolic fable about colonisation, told from the viewpoint of Indigenous Australians. An unseen narrator describes the coming of ‘rabbits’ in the most minimal detail, an encounter that is at first friendly and curious, but later darkens as it becomes apparent that the visitors are actually invaders. The style of the book is deliberately sparse and strange, with both text and image conveying an overall sense of bewilderment and anxiety as native numbat-like creatures witness environmental devastation under the wheels of a strange new culture.

Year 5 students undertook 2 Visible Thinking Routines; Claim, Support, Question and Connect, Extend, Challenge. Through these activities, students have been developing their Resourcefulness learning muscles in making links, reasoning and imagining.

Year 5 Drama: The Magic of the Circus

This week, the students took to the stage to perform their group improvisations.The stimulus question for this drama task was: 'What if you could capture magic moments from the circus and showground and store them in a box?' The students 'opened the box' in this our final drama lesson for the semester.
